A morning full of passion, enthusiasm and celebration!
25th October 2024
The morning started in high spirits celebrating the passion and enthusiasm of children who won prizes by reading books! The Prize Giving Ceremony of the Book Reading Program is a significant event celebrating the achievements of young readers and promoting this habit as a means of becoming enlightened compassionate human beings. A total of 5,137 students from 62 schools were awarded at the Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy for their laudable performance in reading books!
The opening ceremony was graced by Abdullah Abu Sayeed (Chairman, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro), Yasir Azman (CEO, Grameenphone), Mahfuz Anam (Editor and Publisher, The Daily Star), Aminul Islam Bhuiyan (Trustee, BSK), Parveen Mahmud (Trustee, BSK) and Shameem Al Mamun (Director, BSK).
In the program, Grameenphone CEO reflected on his childhood memory of his father who had unquenchable passion for reading books. He was also overwhelmed to see the participation of the students in the event and said “It is indeed good to see that our future generation still enjoys reading books. There is no alternative to reading books if you want to move forward”. As always, Abdullah Abu Sayeed sir’s speech was full of humor. While making students laugh, he made the point clear that “reading literature is never a waste of time, rather it enhances understanding of textbooks. There is no alternative of reading books for personal growth and when the students grow, the nation grows”.
The program was organized by Bishwo Shahitto Kendro (BSK) under its Book Reading Program with the support from Grameenphone. Students from grade 6 – 10 participates the Book Reading Program and through a comprehensive evaluation process winners are selected. This year more than 18,800 students were selected to receive prizes from 315 schools across Bangladesh. So far in Rajshahi, Barisal, Khulna and Dhaka more than 13,000 students have been awarded.
Grameenphone have been supporting BSK since 2004 in different capacity. In all these years, with the support from Grameenphone, the program awarded more than 200,000 students for reading books! With this Grameenphone is implanting reading habit in youth minds. As majority of Bangladesh’s population is youth, they need to be prepared to acquire knowledge and skill from early stage.
