Bashundhara entry road re-opened
Apr 23, 2007
The main access road to Bashundhara Residential Area has been reopened for traffic on 19th April, 2007. The main entry road to the residential area had partially collapsed when the shore protection piles of the adjacent boundary line of the under-construction Grameenphone headquarter project deflected during the morning hours early last month March.
Owing to the collapse, the Bashundhara entry road had to be temporarily closed and an alternate road nearby was opened. GP undertook the road rebuilding work. The 30-foot wide road, including 5-foot wide pavement, was reconstructed in 44 days - one day short of the 45-day repair time estimated by the Grameenphone authorities.
Additionally, an adjoining 6-story building adjacent to the site which was evacuated on fear of possible structural damage was tested and certified to have sustained no damage. The testing and certification was conducted by Shahedullah and New Associates, one of the more renowned structural engineering firms in the country.
The families evacuated from the building after collapse of the road were provided alternative temporary accommodation for 3-weeks by Grameenphone. The families were allowed back into the building only after it was certified to be structurally sound.
Grameenphone's proposed 10-story headquarter building is located adjacent to the main entrance of the Bashundhara Residential Area. The building project is being constructed by Associated Builders Corporation Limited with Vistaara and Icon Architects (VIA) as consultant to the project. The Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation (BRTC) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology are the structural design advisers for the entire headquarters project.
Grameenphone authorities have expressed their regret to the residents of Basundhara Residential Area for the inconvenience caused due to the work and were very grateful for the cooperation and support they have received from the Basundhara authorities, the Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB), WASA, Titas Gas authorities and the DESCO authorities.
