GP 3G reaches all 64 districts in record time
Grameenphone today announced that it is now covering all 64 district headquarters, including seven divisional towns with 3G-network.
The announcement was made during a press conference at Westin Hotel in Dhaka: “This is the fastest 3G-rollout in the history of Telenor Group, and a critical part of our ambition to provide Internet for all. We are proud of the progress so far, but also humble to the fact that both coverage and awareness must increase in order to bring more people to experience 3G”, said Vivek Sood, CEO of Grameenphone.
Grameenphone was awarded a 3G-license along with 10 MHz spectrum in 2100 MHz band in September 2013 through a competitive bidding. The company launched commercial 3G service on October 8th, 2013. By December 31st, 2013, all seven divisional towns and some densely populated cities were brought under 3G-coverage and according to the recent announcement, all district towns have come under coverage in a total of six months.
“Grameenphone is now the largest national broadband service provider. Some 40% of our customers are currently under 3G coverage and approximately 85% of 3G enabled devices can access the 3G network,” said Tanveer Mohammad, CTO of Grameenphone.
Grameenphone's ambition is to provide Internet for All. With 3G-quality internet, an increasing number of Bangladeshis will be able to experience the benefits from being connected.
