GP organizes reception for Bangladesh Special Olympics Team

Grameenphone Ltd. organized a reception program, On December 12, 2007, for the Bangladesh Team who participated in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

This year Bangladesh Special Olympics Team comprised of 47 participants who performed exceptionally well, winning a total of 71 medals. They participated in seven categories namely, aquatics, athletics, badminton, bocce, football, table tennis and cricket. The team won 32 Gold, 15 Silver and 24 Bronze medals.

Mr. Anders Jensen, CEO, Grameenphone; Mr. Ashraf ud Dowla, Chairman, Special Olympics Bangladesh; Management Team members of Grameenphone and other distinguishes guests from corporate houses, media,  and government bodies were present to honor the  athletes and their parents and coaches.

In his speech Mr. Jensen, congratulated the team and stressed on Grameenphone's long term commitment to empower and support these athletes so that they can live up to their full potential.

Professor Kabir Chowdhury, National Professor; Mr. Kaiser Hamid, ex-captain of Bangladesh National Football Team; Ms. Lutfunnesa Hoque Bokul, ex athlete and Gold medalist and Vice President of Bangladesh Women Sports Federation; Ms. Quamrun Nahar Dana, Ex National Badminton and Table Tennis Player & Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Women Sports Federation; Mr. Abu Momtaz Saaduddin Ahmed (Kislu), National Table Tennis Champion & Executive member of Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation; Mr. Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu and Mr. Habibul Bashar, ex-captain of Bangladesh National Cricket Team and Mr. Pratap Shanker Hazra, former coach of National Hockey Team and Vice-Captain of Shadeen Bangla Football Team were also present  at the occasion and had the honor of handing over the crests to the athletes of the Special Olympics Team

Earlier this year Grameenphone embarked upon a partnership with Special Olympics Bangladesh to sponsor the Bangladesh team's participation in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. Special Olympics Bangladesh is a non-profit organization, accredited by Special Olympics International, and created to help people with intellectual disabilities to develop self-confidence, social skills and a sense of personal accomplishment through sports training and competition.

As an extension of its support, Grameenphone also plans to assist in developing the capacity of Special Olympics Bangladesh, as well as its athletes by organizing regional and national competitions to search for new talents and train them for future Special Olympics Games.
