Grameenphone Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammanarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Solar Solution on 5 July 2011 with a view to embark on a feasibility study on low cost Green Energy Solutions.

Mr. Erich Otto Gomm, Acting Country Director, GIZ, Farooq Siddiqui, CEO of Solar Solution and Kazi Monirul Kabir, Chief Communication Officer of Grameenphone Ltd signed this tripartite agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.

The purpose of this MoU is to make a coordinated effort to discover new, innovative and cost effective technologies and/or solutions for renewable energy to meet the energy demands of the rural people of Bangladesh and develop a sustainable energy supply for future growth prospects. The survey will be conducted at Gorgorir Char (Chak Ramoura) , Bagha upzila of Rajshai district.

The report of the feasibility study is expected to be disseminated among the stakeholders by Q4, 2011.

Mr. Rolf Dieter Reinhard, Deputy Head of Mission, Counsellor, Political and Economic Affairs, German Embassy, Mr. Tanveer Mohammad, Chief Technology Officer of Grameenphone, Mollah Amzad Hossain, Editor, Energy & Power and other distinguished guests from GIZ, Solar Solution and Grameenphone were also present during the signing ceremony.

In Bangladesh, majority of the population do not have direct access to electricity while many people who have access rely on unreliable source for power. As a responsible corporate citizen, Grameenphone always strive to develop the life of the general people through technology and other initiatives.

Earlier this year, Grameenphone launched a Community Solar Power project at Paharpur Village under Ajmirigonj Upazilla of Hobigonj district to develop a robust and cost effective decentralized mini-grid infrastructure based on renewable energy for rural development in Bangladesh to help the local peoples’ livelihood to grow and contribute to the Government's commitment to a digital Bangladesh.
